Last Duel Trailer: Matt Damon & Ben Affleck Reunite In Ridley Scott Epic

20th Century Studios unveils the first trailer for Ridley Scott's adaptation of the historical drama novel The Last Duel, which arrives this October. The film is based on Eric Jager's 2004 book of the same name, which itself is based on the true story of the trial by combat duel between Norman knight Jean de Carrouges and squire Jacques Le Gris over accusations the latter raped his wife. Unwilling to remain quiet, Carrogues' wife Marguerite elects to put her life in jeopardy by stepping forward to accuse the attacker, with the ensuing trial putting the fate of all three in God's hands.

The ensemble cast for The Last Duel is led by Oscar winner Matt Damon as Carrouges, two-time Oscar nominee Adam Driver as Le Gris, Emmy winner Jodie Comer as Marguerite and Oscar winner Ben Affleck as Count Pierre d'Alençon. Development on the film adaptation has been in the works since 2015 when Francis Lawrence first planned to direct on a script from Shaun Grant, but languished in development hell until Scott signed on to direct in mid-2019 with Affleck and Damon set to star and Can You Ever Forgive Me?'s Nicole Holofcener penning. Despite the Disney-Fox merger putting the film's status as unknown, development and production marched on through COVID-19 delays and wrapped in Ireland in October.

With just a few months remaining until the film's release, 20th Century Studios has unveiled the first trailer for The Last Duel. In addition to teasing the reunion of Damon and Affleck for the first time since 2001's Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back, the video offers a look at the emotional story at the heart of Scott's historical epic. Check out the trailer below:

Though Scott may be better known his sci-fi genre work, namely the Alien franchise and Blade Runner, the world of historical epics has been a love of his since his debut The Duellists. While it has resulted in some of fans' favorite films from the director, namely Gladiator, it has also seen him deliver some of his most polarizing works, including 1492: Conquest of Paradise and Kingdom of Heaven. But the first trailer for The Last Duel certainly looks to be a promising return to the genre for the director.

Between its gorgeous and authentic recreations of its period setting attire and locations, the production design certainly looks to have put their best effort forward and the actors are no different. Damon and Affleck have consistently proven to be a quality duo, given their childhood friendship, and Driver and Comer have also remained strong performers across their various genre jumps, which makes their combined work in The Last Duel an exciting draw. With any luck, Scott and his cast deliver some of the best work in their careers when the film arrives in theaters on October 15.
