MCU: 5 Times The Superheroes Were Overpowered (& 5 They Were Defeated Easily)

The format of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies has not changed since Iron Man arrived in 2008. While the movies play out in a variety of genres, from action and heist movies to sci-fi adventures and fantasy tales, they have the same plot. A villain pushes a hero to the limit before beating them, which forces the hero to find his inner resolve and finally come out on top.

The way these heroes react varies, though. Sometimes, the Marvel heroes are completely overpowered, with little chance of losing a battle unless they face a villain equally overpowering. However, there are other times where the villains beat the heroes easily, these Marvel superheroes proving winning a battle isn't always as easy as it looks, even with superpowers.

10 Overpowered: Hulk

There might not be a more overpowered superhero in the Marvel Universe, in the movies or comics, than Hulk. There is no limit to his power levels and the angrier he gets, the stronger he gets. He also has a healing factor, so even when he gets hurt, things heal up quickly. He took Iron Man to the limit and beat Thor in Thor: Ragnarok. The MCU even took him out of the battle on Earth with Thanos because he is so overpowered. The new smart Hulk is not as powerful because he lacks the rage, and it might be a way for the MCU to weaken him somewhat.

9 Defeated Easily: Iron Man - Iron Man 3 (2013)

Iron Man was one of the MCU's most arrogant superheroes. He believed at times he was unbeatable and that helped him win fights no one expected him to overcome. However, his arrogance almost got him killed more than once, and in Iron Man 3, Pepper Potts almost died along with him. The Mandarin antagonized him, so Iron Man gave out his address on TV and told the villain to bring the fight to him. Mandarin showed up in a helicopter and bombed Stark's home, beating him easily and sending him into hiding until he could find a way back.

8 Overpowered: The Avengers

In the comics, The Avengers formed when the world needed Earth's Mightiest Heroes to overcome immense odds and save the world. In their first teaming, they defeated an entire army of invading aliens to save New York City. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, they beat an entire army of overpowered robots to save the entire world. When Thanos attacked Earth, the MCU split up the Avengers to make it possible. When they got back together, they proved how overpowered they are when they beat a Titan with the full power of the Infinity Gauntlet.

7 Defeated Easily: Hawkeye - The Avengers (2012)

In the first Avengers movie, when Loki first attacked, he enchanted Hawkeye and escaped from S.H.I.E.L.D. with the Tesseract. Then the Avengers formed, capturing Loki. However, he easily defeated them on the Helicarrier by enchanting Hulk. Loki still had Hawkeye there to help him, but he didn't stand up well to the Avengers.

Black Widow and Hawkeye faced off, and while the two were close allies, she had no problem taking him down. She knocked him out and helped free him from Loki's enchantment, but in that first Avengers movie, Hawkeye was less than impressive.

6 Overpowered: Groot

Out of all the Guardians of the Galaxy members, Groot was the most overpowered. While he was the only one to die in the first movie, it took an Infinity Stone to beat him and he sacrificed himself, which is very different than falling to a foe. Groot had massive powers. He could regrow parts of his body when he lost them. He could lengthen his body parts to use as weapons.

He surrendered to the Nova Corps but was one of the first to rise to fight them in his prison, easily overcoming the galaxy's strongest police force. Baby Groot and Teen Groot have not shown the same power level as his predecessor, but once he becomes an adult, Groot will once again be one of the galaxy's most overpowered heroes.

5 Defeated Easily: Gamora - Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

Thanos defeated almost all Earth’s heroes in Avengers: Infinity War in two different fights. However, he was tearing through the universe before he arrived on Earth. This included a battle with the Guardians of the Galaxy on Knowhere. He beat them using the Infinity Stones and took Gamora. When Thanos reached Vormir, he sacrificed Gamora for the Soul Stone and she never stood a chance. Gamora also couldn't beat Star-Lord cleanly in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, which seemed strange since she was trained to be a master assassin.

4 Overpowered: Captain America

Captain America is a human who was at one time a skinny, undersized kid with big dreams. He then received the Super Soldier Serum and became a superhero fighting for the U.S. Government in World War II. No one could beat him then and he sacrificed himself to stop Red Skull, succeeding in that goal.

Since returning, Captain America is almost unbeatable and highly overpowered. He fought an entire group of trained S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives in an elevator and walked out unscathed. He teamed with Winter Soldier to beat Iron Man. He fought Thanos and proved to be strong enough to hold him back.

3 Defeated Easily: Nick Fury - Captain America: Winter Soldier (2014)

Captain America: The Winter Soldier presented overwhelming odds to all heroes in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. Captain America’s best friend Bucky was back from the dead and was now an assassin known as Winter Soldier. Hydra took over S.H.I.E.L.D. and part of the United States government, making the heroes fugitives. Cap’s best ally in the government, Nick Fury, ended up going down. Winter Soldier attacked Fury and defeated him easily. Nick Fury escaped and went into hiding before Winter Soldier could kill him, but it was still an embarrassing loss for the super spy.

2 Overpowered: Thor

Outside of Hulk, Thor is the most overpowered superhero in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the comics, Thor is seen as one of the most overpowered heroes of anyone, and he often remains out of action to make the battles seem more even. In Civil War, both the movie and the comic series, Thor was not there, likely because he would easily alter the odds. It took fighting Hulk to bring Thor down in Thor: Ragnarok, and even then, Grandmaster had to cheat for Hulk to win.

1 Defeated Easily: Warriors Three - Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

In the first two Thor movies, the Warriors Three proved invaluable allies to the God of Thunder. They arrived on Earth to save Thor when the Destroyer attacked and helped him stop Malekith in the battle of the Nine Realms. These Asgardian warriors proved noble and stood up to all tests.

It was almost embarrassing to see the Warriors Three in Thor: Ragnarok. Hela arrived in Asgard and killed Volstagg and Fandral before they even knew what happened. She then destroyed Asgard's royal army and killed Hogun almost as easily. Hela destroyed three of Asgard's greatest warriors without breaking a sweat.
