MCU Theory: Agatha Harkness Will Be The Next "Dark Avengers" Recruit

WandaVision may have wrapped its nine-episode season, but it’s possible Agatha Harkness will be the next recruit for the Dark Avengers. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has continued building out its world in the post-Avengers: Endgame era by introducing new characters — villains and protagonists alike — and planting seeds for the next stage of its overarching story. Agatha brought a lot of pizzazz to her role in WandaVision and the arrival of a mysterious character in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier could see her joining a new group of antagonists.

Agatha began life in the MCU as Wanda Maximoff and Vision’s nosy neighbor in the picturesque town of Westview. The charade came to an end, however, when Agatha revealed herself as a centuries-old witch who possessed the Darkhold, a book of spells, and was drawn to Westview because of Scarlet Witch’s immense power. Before Agatha could get what she wanted from Wanda, however, the antagonist’s story came to an abrupt end.

The introduction of Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier shook things up for the MCU in Phase Four. Valentina recruited John Walker to work for her after he was dropped from his role as Captain America and Black Widow saw her approach Yelena Belova, Natasha Romanoff's sister, for a hit job, suggesting she and the assassin are already in league with each other. As Valentina continues recruiting people to do her bidding, it’s possible she could reverse Agatha’s fate from WandaVision and work her into the Dark Avengers, a group of supervillains masquerading as heroes in Marvel comics.

Agatha Harkness made quite the splash when she appeared in WandaVision and fans couldn’t get enough of the overly perky neighbor before she established herself as a powerful witch intent on claiming Scarlet Witch’s abilities for herself. Of course, such a character wouldn’t have been left by the wayside forever and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed Agatha’s return to the MCU and how it “can’t come soon enough.” When it comes to the MCU, any character who makes it out alive at the end of a TV series or movie could return in another project. With her own catchy song and a charming, mischievous performance by Kathryn Hahn, Agatha quickly became a memorable character and someone fans wanted to see more of down the line. Where she will show up next is the big mystery since WandaVision ended with Agatha being hexed by Wanda and stuck living in Westview for the foreseeable future, but a proposed appearance in the future will be worth the wait.

Agatha was forced to remain in Westview at the end of WandaVision season 1, placed under a hex by Scarlet Witch and made to believe she’s actually from the neighborhood. It was a mind trap used to punish Agatha for attempting to steal Wanda’s powers. With Agatha grounded, she could no longer go after Scarlet Witch or anyone else. But just because Agatha is trapped in Westview for now doesn’t mean she won’t eventually break free of the spell to plot her revenge against Wanda. The fact she is alive at all certainly means she’ll be back and, frankly, she’s too good a character to leave behind for long.

What’s more, Agatha is an incredibly powerful witch and it’s possible she’s strong enough to realize something isn’t right with her memories before finally escaping her imprisonment. If the regular citizens of Westview could sense something was wrong, being a witch gives Agatha even more of an advantage. It’s impossible to know how long the hex will hold such a strong and capable witch like Agatha. However, her revenge may entail teaming up with Contessa Valentina de Fontaine, who could find her way to Westview to help Agatha come back to herself.

Contessa Valentina de Fontaine knows exactly what she’s doing. By finding and establishing connections with characters like John Walker and Yelena, she seems to be rounding up those who have been wronged in some way by others. In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Walker felt like he was used by the U.S. government, who gave him the mantle of Captain America before taking it away after he killed someone very publicly and in cold blood; Yelena was abused by Dreykov’s Red Room, a facility where she was trained to become a spy and ruthless assassin. In Black Widow, Valentina recruits her to kill Hawkeye, who Yelena now blames for Black Widow’s death.

Agatha, meanwhile, was “wronged” by Scarlet Witch, who fought her, stripped her of her powers, and left her in Westview without memories of her true identity. Agatha was already willing to go the distance in stealing Wanda’s powers, but she now has a bigger gripe with the Scarlet Witch after being attacked and left behind indefinitely. It’s unclear how Valentina would go about removing the spell from Agatha, but she seems like she’s got a few tricks up her sleeve. With Agatha potentially joining up with Valentina, the potential Dark Avengers plot can move forward.

In the comics, the Dark Avengers assembled are copycats of the real heroes they’re impersonating. Venom is Spider-Man, Bullseye is Hawkeye, Moonstone is Ms. Marvel, and so on. The team is commanded by Norman Osborn, whose actions during the “Secret Invasion” storyline — which ended the Skrull overtaking the world — landed him the gig. In the MCU, John Walker has already been Captain America and can take up the mantle again for Valentina’s team. Yelena would effectively take the place of Natasha’s Black Widow and Agatha would be Valentina’s replacement for Scarlet Witch. Similarly, the contessa would be Osborn in this instance, which makes sense considering he hasn’t been introduced in the MCU yet and the live-action adaptation of the Dark Avengers wouldn’t look exactly the same as in the comics anyway.

Agatha Harkness is just as powerful as Scarlet Witch and she’s got years of experience wielding her abilities and growing her powers. If Valentina assists Agatha in breaking free from the hex and provides her an opportunity to get back at Wanda for what she did, the witch would likely be more willing to aid in whatever Valentina has planned in Phase Four of the MCU. Plus, having Agatha onboard means there would be someone around who could fight Wanda if need be, so joining Valentina’s secret organization and the Dark Avengers makes a lot of sense. While it’s unclear what the contessa’s goals are, she’s rounding up the best of the best in terms of skills, strength, and power. Agatha's full potential has yet to be tapped into and her loss in WandaVision could be Valentina's gain.
