Terminator Salvation's Forgotten Web Series (& Where To Find It)

Terminator Salvation may not have gotten a sequel, but it did receive a prequel in the form of a forgotten web series. Salvation is a 2009 entry in the long-running Terminator franchise that was originally intended to be the first installment in a new trilogy that would've culminated in the climactic future events referenced in the original The Terminator in 1984. Unfortunately, the original vision for Terminator 5 and Terminator 6 never came to fruition.

Set in the then-future year of 2018, Terminator Salvation was a fresh take on the series that told the story of John Conner's struggle to rise as a figurehead within the human resistance, and the fateful events which first brought him into contact with his father, Kyle Reese. The sequel was created as a stepping stone between the world of the first three films and the Future War depicted in the franchise's various flashback sequences. However, when audiences and critics didn't bite, plans for moving further into the future with the next films were scrapped.

However, the story set up in Salvation did continue thanks to a six-episode web series that many Terminator fans might not even know exists. Known as Terminator Salvation: The Machinima Series, the short show was a prequel set several years before the events of the film. And while the Salvation movie itself might have come and gone twelve years ago, the series can still be viewed online on YouTube and enjoyed by fans. The Machinima Series was, as the title suggests, was produced by the multimedia entertainment network Machinima. The company's biggest claim to fame was their software that allowed 3D character models from video games to be animated and used to make entirely new projects.

Their first long-form use of this technology was their Terminator series, which was produced with permission from Warner Brothers, who distributed Salvation. The series, which consisted of six 11 to 14-minute episodes, released weekly on Machinima's website and used the same character models from the Terminator Salvation video game to tell a new prequel set in 2016 - two years before the events of the film. The plot focused on resistance fighter Blair Williams (voiced by Moon Bloodgood) as she attempts to seek out and recruit a computer hacker named Laz Howard in the post-apocalyptic rubble of Los Angeles.

In addition to being posted online, Terminator Salvation: The Machinima Series was also released on DVD in November 2009. The series remained easily available until 2019 when Machinima shut down their YouTube channel and ceased operations following their acquisition by Warner Brothers Digital Networks. Thankfully, this unique animated spinoff of Terminator Salvation can still be found on out-of-print DVDs and can be purchased/streamed via Amazon Prime, iTunes or Google Play.
