Bleach: The Shinigami, Ranked By Cunning | ScreenRant

Soul Society in Bleach is a diverse realm divided by uncompromising lines of hierarchy and social status. There are various types of Shinigami, each of whom possesses different levels of strength, reiatsu, as well as intelligence. As such, that the smartest among them are often found in the Vice-Captain class or higher.

Bleach's heroes often win their battles using pure strength, instead attributing features like deceit and guile to its antagonists. That said, there are Shinigami with enough experience and cunning to understand that only using brute force is rarely, if ever, a viable solution.

10 Oetsu Nimaiya

Nimaiya, the creator of the Zanpakuto and one of the Zero Squad, is an eccentric man with an apparent liking for pomp and splendor. However, it seems that his flashy behavior is a cover when he reveals that his Phoenix Palace is actually a ramshackle shed.

Nimaiya is an extremely powerful character, but he's nevertheless cautious in battle, taking no risks when dealing with the Schutzstaffel. Further, he is smart enough to make risky choices liking slicing his jugular open and having Kirinji heal his blood in order to survive Askin's poison-based technique.

9 Yumichika Ayasegawa

Yumichika's outward demeanor is overtly conceited; he ensures his hair and clothing are perfect in any given situation, complaining loudly about tiny smudges of dirt that are inevitable in any fight.

That said, he doesn't play all his cards at once, especially in terms of disclosing his Zanpakuto's real abilities, which is how he manages to secure a seemingly impossible victory against Charlotte Cuuhlhourne. While Yumichika's tactics may be heavy-handed, they tend to work.

8 Retsu Unohana

As Seireitei's most accomplished medical professional, Unohana's maternal kindness and unbreakable composure hold strong for hundreds of years.

However, the emergence of the Wandenreich leaves her with no option but to train her tenth successor, Kenpachi Zaraki, to the point where he is strong enough to kill her. The fact that Unohana identifies Aizen's dead body as fake after a basic examination is more proof of her shrewdness.

7 Nanao Ise

Nanao Ise has very little combat experience, but her mastery over the complex facets and techniques of Kido lets her face opponents with far greater reiatsu than herself—or Shunsui, for that matter. She is one of the two Vice-Captains of the First Division because the Captain-Commander insists that Nanao is capable of handling him, leaving the bureaucratic affairs to Okikiba.

6 Yamamoto Genryusai

Yamamoto's role as the Captain-Commander of the Gotei 13, a position he has held for at least a thousand years, signifies that his perception is unmatched and accounts for various contingencies.

Despite Aizen's clear advantage over his captains, he doesn't assist the latter when they are cut down, instead using the time to calculate the Bleach villain's moves and establish an effective game plan. Unfortunately, Yamamoto's Ennetsu Jigoku is countered by Aizen's relatively smarter plan of negating Ryujin Jakka itself.

5 Yoruichi Shihoin

Yoruichi is usually easygoing, insisting on a low-pressure environment for her subordinates or teasing Ichigo & Byakuya whenever she gets the chance. Behind her playful mask, however, beats the heart of a genius strategist.

Yoruichi rapidly figures out her opponent's maneuvers and adapts to them, regardless of how complicated they might be. Although her leadership of the Onmitsukido is inherited, it's clear that she's always going to be better at it than her successor, Suì-Fēng.

4 Kyoraku Shunsui

Shunsui would rather not indulge in combat if there's a nonviolent solution; he understands that fighting is a pointless exercise of physical power. He is a remarkably intelligent character, as well, considering how easily he takes Chad out in the Soul Society arc—not to mention defeating Coyote Starrk without resorting to his dangerous bankai. Central 46 promotes Shunsui to Captain-Commander, noting that his wisdom surpasses everyone else in the Gotei 13.

3 Ichimaru Gin

Ichimaru Gin's cunning helps him evade Aizen's penetrating gaze, which, in turn, allows him to escape detection for more than a century. Sadly, his double-agent status means that the Shinigami are equally bamboozled, including his beloved Matsumoto.

He develops the ideal scheme to kill Aizen once and for all, taking no chances until the right time. Gin doesn't succeed, of course, but he would have if the Hogyoku hadn't intervened at the last second.

2 Mayuri Kurotsuchi

Mayuri's sadism is downright obnoxious, but it doesn't detract from his overwhelming intellect. It is said that this captain requires no more than 24 hours to visualize every aspect of a problem and deliver an adequate remedy.

Mayuri defeats most of his opponents by relying on his craftiness more than anything else, like when he tricks an intelligent Espada like Szayelaporro into ingesting his time-dilation poison. He rarely enters into a fight without dozens of preset precautions and exigencies.

1 Kisuke Urahara

Urahara possesses the sharpest mind in Bleach without exception. His skills of deduction are borderline Sherlockian, such as his accurate assumption that Ichigo would eventually defeat Aizen, an event that is programmed to lead to the villain's instant incarceration within an exotic Bakudo spell,

Most impressively, Yhwach identifies Urahara as a Special War Potential, a dangerous threat who cannot be defeated by ordinary means. However, not even the most intelligent Sternritter, Askin Nakk le Vaar, is capable of winning against him.
