Brooklyn 99 Season 8 Clip References Justice League Snyder Cut

A clip from the latest episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 8 sees Jake referencing the Snyder Cut in a debate with Captain Holt. The beloved Fox-turned-NBC workplace comedy returned last week for its final season, which was announced earlier this year. Since 2013, Brooklyn Nine-Nine has reigned as one of television's most beloved shows, a fact that allowed it to be saved from cancellation after season 6. The series follows the members of Brooklyn's 99th precinct as they solve cases, get up to hilarious hijinks, and become a family.

Like most shows within the past year, Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 8 was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. Additionally, amid the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, the series' writers scrapped their initial scripts in order to craft a season that could sensitively handle the ongoing issues with police brutality. Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 8's first two episodes touched upon this a bit by having Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz) resign from the force. It remains to be seen if the show will delve deeper into this as the final season continues.

In a new clip from Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 8, episode 3 (via TV Promos), "Blue Flu," Jake (Andy Samberg) and Captain Holt (Andre Braugher) engage in a little debate over tridents. It all starts when Holt announces "Operation Trident," which has a three-pronged approach like the legendary weapon. Jake soon chimes in with an objection regarding Aquaman's trident, which has 5 prongs. He points out this is supported by none other than the Snyder Cut. Check it out below.

The Snyder Cut, the internet's name for Zack Snyder's Justice League, arrived on HBO Max this year after a massive fan campaign. Following the theatrical cut of Justice League in 2017, which was largely overseen by Joss Whedon, fans called for the release of Zack Snyder's original version. The Snyder Cut was well-received by fans when it premiered, and it sounds like Jake is something of an admirer himself. At the very least, he found 4 hours to watch the entire thing.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is no stranger to pop culture references; it frequently spoofs and pokes fun at other movies, with Die Hard being a popular recurring reference. That the Snyder Cut has made its way into a show like this just highlights how massive the phenomenon has become. There was once a time when only truly dedicated fans online knew what the Snyder Cut was, but now it's something that can be offhandedly mentioned. Jake didn't even say Justice League specifically, just "Snyder Cut." It's come a long way, and that's something to celebrate.
