Guardians of the Galaxy Game's Groot Wears Armor Designed By Rocket

A new development video for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy has shared details on the designs of some of the Guardians, revealing that Groot's armor is actually created by Rocket Raccoon. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy was announced by Square Enix during E3 2021, and will be set in its own unique universe, allowing more creative freedom for the characters' designs.

While the Guardians of the Galaxy game will feature familiar names, developer Eidos-Montréal isn't basing its title on any existing Guardians canon. The movies and comics may be made reference to with Easter eggs, but the Guardians of the Galaxy game promises to deliver a fresh take on the existing Guardians, with the developer designing their looks from the ground up. Despite not yet releasing, the game has been compared to Square Enix's Marvel's Avengers, which was heavily panned for its live-service elements. However, Guardians of the Galaxy will be single-player, and won't include any microtransactions.

The game's art director, Bruno Gauthier-Leblanc, has given a closer look at some of the characters in a new EidosMontreal YouTube video, revealing some of the reasons behind the development team's design choices. According to the developer, Groot's look was "the hardest to nail," as the team wanted him to have more armor platings as if he were "a big mech." The insight video also revealed that Rocket is the creator of Groot's armor, and that Groot and Rocket's designs are interlinked. He explained:

"Since [Groot] and Rocket are best friends, we thought that Rocket should always be customizing Groot, in the sense that it's his mech. Therefore [Rocket] added a harness to him so he can grab onto him, stay onto him, use him as a turret...Groot and Rocket are intertwined as designs."

Rocket's look also pays homage to his best friend Groot, with Rocket wearing a bead of Groot in his goatee.

The video highlights how the designs of the Guardians game's Groot and Rocket aren't just visual, but also serve a role within the gameplay itself. The video shows Rocket atop of Groot in combat, with the combined characters looking like a formidable duo capable of both attacking and defending. Rocket's arsenal of weapons include guns and bombs, and the added height from Groot could allow for more precise hits, as well as the ability to reach otherwise impossible targets. Players will have to wait until the game's release to see just how the duo's designs facilitate the gameplay.

While the symbiotic character designs of Groot and Rocket are certainly impressive, players won't be able to try them out for themselves as the majority of the Guardians of the Galaxy game characters are thought to be AI companions. The only confirmed playable character in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is Star-Lord. While have some have found this disappointing, the game is still shaping up nicely. Marvel fans won't have long to wait until its release, as the game is due out later this year.
