Returning Matrix 4 Characters Missing From Resurrections' Trailer

The first trailer for The Matrix Resurrections left out several returning characters confirmed to appear. When it was first announced that Matrix 4 was happening, it came with the news that Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss would return as Neo and Trinity. Fans of the Matrix franchise waited 18 years to see them come back and learn how the two dead characters could return. That finally happened now that Warner Bros. released the first Matrix Resurrections trailer.

As the first piece of marketing for The Matrix Resurrections, the trailer lays out what is new and familiar about the fourth entry in Lana Wachowski's franchise. Neo is back in the Matrix going by Thomas Anderson and has no recollection of who Trinity is, likely due to the blue pills he is prescribed. But, it seems that Neo will be reawakened at some point in the movie and be reunited with a younger version of Morpheus, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. While the Matrix Resurrections trailer does include teases of how it will be different from past movies, it isn't surprising to see it rely heavily on showing the familiar actors and characters who will return.

The returns of Neo, Trinity, and Morpheus are one of many reasons why fans are so excited to see The Matrix Resurrections. The movie also features Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, and Neil Patrick Harris playing what appear to be new characters. There are some other familiar faces from the original Matrix trilogy that are expected to be seen too. Speculation has already mounted that Priyanka Chopra's character is an older version of Sati. But, The Matrix Resurrections' trailer held back on showing all of its returning characters. Here are the returning Matrix characters missing from the trailer.

It is confirmed that Jada Pinkett-Smith is returning in The Matrix Resurrections as Niobe. She joined the franchise for The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. Niobe plays a significant role within the Resistance, as she captains Logos and Logos II. Since Niobe survived the battle with the Sentinels in Zion, there are multiple ways that she could return in The Matrix Resurrections. The presence of a young Morpheus raises even more possibilities since they were romantically involved in the previous movies.

It is also expected that Lambert Wilson will return as The Merovingian in The Matrix Resurrections. Wilson played the role in Reloaded and Revolutions previously. The Merovingian is one of the oldest programs within the Matrix, so The Matrix Resurrections revisiting that world can explain his return. Since he played a role in helping Trinity free Neo in Revolutions, The Merovingian could serve a similar function in Resurrections if Neo is trying to free Trinity.

It wouldn't be a Matrix movie without Agents and, while Hugo Weaving isn't returning as Agent Smith, The Matrix Resurrections will see Daniel Bernhardt play Agent Johnson again. There are some agents visible in the Resurrections trailer, but none of them are Bernhardt's character. He was the leader of the upgraded Agents in Reloaded, so Agent Johnson could remain at the top of the Agent food chain inside The Matrix Resurrections' rebooted Matrix.
