Far Cry 6: How Big Yara's Map Size Is Compared To Far Cry 5

Far Cry 6 was released after much anticipation from fans, with map size being one of the biggest questions on people's minds. Far Cry 6 takes place in Yara, and its open-world is reportedly bigger than its predecessor's. But how much bigger is Far Cry 6's map compared to the one in Far Cry 5?

The answer isn't immediately obvious due to the awkward borders of the map, meant to realistically resemble an island nation. Additionally, much of the map is surrounded by an open ocean, which wasn't a factor for Far Cry 5, which takes place in fictional Hope County, Montana. With a large map filled with gorgeous scenery, Far Cry 5 even has hidden locations for players to find. This game boasted about 10.8 square miles of playable area, which was impressive when the game was first released.

In comparison, Far Cry 4's map of Kyrat had roughly 9.3 square miles of land to explore. These areas were calculated by user JamesEVI on Reddit, which makes the comparison of map sizes a bit easier. The map for Yara, the island country Far Cry 6 takes place on, is massive and dense. There are interesting locations to visit and hidden collectibles to discover across these seemingly picturesque enviroments. A wide variety of biomes can be found as well, giving this fictitious island a unique and dynamic feel.

Recently, Gamepur showed just how big Far Cry 6's map is and estimated it at 34 square miles, but this included the ocean. Yara itself covers a playable area of about 12.05 square miles. Roughly 0.64 square miles of this total belongs to Isla Santuario, the introductory location in Far Cry 6, where players can find some excellent starting weapons and get used to the gameplay. This total also includes some of the large bodies of water that are explorable in Far Cry 6, like the bay on the southern edge of the Madrugada region, but much of the ocean is intentionally cut from this total to reflect a more realistic gameplay area.

The team at Ubisoft created a bustling country for Far Cry 6, complete with a large capital city, Esperanza. This city alone spans an impressive half a square mile. In true open-world fashion, players may head straight for the capital if they wish, but it is not advised. The city of Esperanza is the seat of power for this installment's main antagonist, a powerful dictator known as Antón Castillo.

Far Cry has expanded the size and depth of its worlds with each successive game. When directly comparing Far Cry 5's map to Far Cry 6, for example, it is obvious Yara's map is bigger. At just over 12 square miles, Far Cry 6 is almost 2.2x bigger than Los Angeles International Airport, which itself spans 5.5 square miles.
