Why Deadpool 3’s Best New Character Is Squirrel Girl

The leaked footage of Milana Vayntrub as Squirrel Girl already confirms she is the best new character for Deadpool 3 despite the project's infancy. Kevin Biegel, the former writer for Marvel's canceled New Warriors series, recently released previously unseen test footage from 2017 showing Vayntrub as Squirrel Girl. The overwhelmingly positive reaction to the pilot footage could result in another win for Deadpool 3 after Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige also confirmed the latest Deadpool installment would finally be integrated into the MCU.

Despite a somewhat ludicrous character design, Squirrel Girl features prominently across Marvel Comics canon, frequently fighting alongside Marvel entities such as Iron Man, The Hulk, and The Thing. Squirrel Girl, predictably, can commune with all manner of furry fauna while also sporting a bushy prehensile tail of her own. Like most canonical superheroes, she also possesses the potent combination of superspeed and strength, allowing her to surprisingly battle an array of enemies including powerful villains like Doctor Doom.

The best character that the MCU's Deadpool 3 can introduce to its roster is Milana Vayntrub's Squirrel Girl, given the furor surrounding her leaked performance tape in New Warriors. How Vayntrub's Squirrel Girl has been introduced to the public draws clear parallels with Ryan Reynold's famous Deadpool footage leak in 2014, setting up ample comedic reserves for Deadpool 3 to utilize. Squirrel Girl and Deadpool also have a vast canonical history both opposing and defending one another in differing timelines, which Reynolds and Vayntrub could breathe fresh life into onscreen.

It is perhaps unsurprising that there is such an impassioned response for Milana Vayntrub's lost Squirrel Girl performance, given many Marvel fans' past propensity for raving over leaked footage. There is more than a shade of deja vu between Biegel's New Warriors Twitter unveiling and Ryan Reynold's connected Deadpool teasers. Before 2014, Reynolds struggled to get his vision of a comic-accurate Deadpool made, with suitors at 20th Century Fox fearing an R-rated superhero movie featuring such an obscure character would result in a box office flop. Yet the response to Reynold's character footage, revealed in a very timely manner at the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con, was nothing short of glowing. The footage placated Fox executives with the promise of a warm Deadpool reception, and Reynolds got his movie, which seems to be how Vaybtrub's Squirrel Girl is headed given the outpouring of support for her character from various media outlets.

The similarities between the Deadpool and Squirrel Girl leaks mean she should be an automatic inclusion into the Deadpool 3 movie casting conversation. Reynold's Deadpool has a history of breaking the fourth wall to reference the movie industries' internal workings, actively denouncing Marvel's decision to introduce a butchered version of Deadpool into 2009's X Men Origins: Wolverine. In this vein, adding Squirrel Girl to Deadpool 3 sets up a whole new binder of jokes for Reynolds to field as the "merc with the mouth" while also paying homage to the initial Squirrel girl performance from Vayntrub that could not be repressed.

Introducing Squirrel Girl in Deadpool 3 also has its narrative merits, with the mammal champion crossing paths with Deadpool many times in Marvel comics canon. Squirrel Girl manages to defeat Deadpool in Cable & Deadpool #30, much to the chagrin of the self-healing mercenary, setting up an interesting dynamic of respect and frustration between the two characters. The phase 4 Marvel Studios strategy would be wise to include this relationship in Deadpool 3, given the back-and-forth comical chemistry that Reynolds and Vayntrub could foster on screen. Deadpool's prior beating at the hands of Squirrel Girl also gives the MCU the option of introducing Vayntrub as an antagonist in Deadpool 3 before exploring the two characters' eventual friendship. While plot details on the Deadpool 3 project are currently scarce, integrating Squirrel Girl into the MCU looks like an increasingly smart play by Marvel given the burgeoning popularity of Vayntrub's character.
