Matrix 4 Trailer Reveals More Footage Of Neo In The Real World

A new The Matrix Resurrections trailer arrives giving a new look at Keanu Reeves' Neo in the real world outside of the titular false universe. The latest film in the sci-fi action franchise is set 20 years after the events of it predecessor, The Matrix Revolutions, as Neo is back living in The Matrix under the seemingly normal life of Thomas A. Anderson, with no memory of the original trilogy or Trinity, whom also has no memory of him. However, when Neo is reunited with Morpheus and offered a red pill, he slowly begins reopening his mind to the truth behind The Matrix and must find a way to save humanity once again.

Reeves returns to lead the cast of The Matrix Resurrections alongside franchise vets Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity, Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe, Lambert Wilson as The Merovingian and Daniel Bernhardt as Agent Johnson. The film also features an ensemble cast of Matrix newcomers including Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Morpheus, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Piryanka Chopra Jonas and Christina Ricci. Production on The Matrix Resurrections was hampered by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, with returning co-writer/director Lana Wachowski nearly shelving the project before being convinced by the cast to finish it and would ultimately conclude in late 2020 while set for a December 2021 theatrical and HBO Max release.

Ahead of tickets going on sale for the highly anticipated sequel, Warner Bros. has unveiled a new The Matrix Resurrections trailer. The video offers a look at the parallels between the new film and the original trilogy while also offering a new look at Neo in the real world. Check out the exciting new trailer below:

The footage of Neo in the real world in The Matrix Resurrections comes as a major development in the sequel's story, confirming it will explore the apocalyptic landscape of machines still ruling over humanity. While previous trailers for the film have featured footage of the human harvesting pods seen in the original Matrix, the latest video offers the first confirmation that this won't be a flashback to Neo's original awakening but rather his reawakening to the truth behind The Matrix. Given Reeves and Moss have teased the love story centered as the heart of the film's plot, it can be assumed Neo going back into The Matrix will likely stem from his goal of trying to find a way for Trinity to come back to the real world, despite her death in The Matrix Revolutions.

The new The Matrix Resurrections trailer also comes with the first look at the return of Lambert Wilson's The Merovingian, who was last seen in The Matrix Revolutions has keeping Neo prisoner in the mysterious Mobil Avenue train station and was assumed to have been assimilated by Agent Smith. Though only offering a brief glimpse, the video reveals the Merovingian to be in a state of some dismay as his hair and facial hair have grown to unkempt extremes and his suit appears to be in tatters. The wait for all questions to be answered is nearly over as The Matrix Resurrections hits theaters and HBO Max on December 22.
